A PROFESSIONAL ESTHETICIAN’S JOURNEY INTO HOLISTIC SKINCARE My Personal Journey in the Beauty and Wellness Industry: Overcoming Allergic Reactions and Founding Petals & Clay Since 1998, I have been a part of the beauty and wellness industry. My life took a turn in 2004, as I developed reactive and sensitive skin during my pregnancy. To my dismay, the professional product lines that I had been using for years began causing me allergic reactions. Even luxurious makeup brands resulted in eczema on my face and swelling around my eyes. This persisted for years, leading to a burning and itching sensation to anything that touched my face. I initially assumed the problem was me, not the ingredients in the products. My condition worsened as the eczema spread to my hands, which were exposed to lab-created products for hours every day in my professional spa environment. Consequently, my body began to reject everything, and no prescription helped my condition. I had to wear cotton gloves because my skin was raw and bleeding. At one point, I had to stop working to give my hands time to heal. As an esthetician, I was uncertain of what to do and felt lost. To heal myself, I started reading books about natural healing and fell in love with the philosophy of using the natural world for healing. I also began examining lifestyle choices along with what we put on our skin, and as I cleaned up my diet, I discovered the power of herbs. In 2008, I founded an apothecary-style spa that used raw clays and herbs that had been a part of my treatment room for over a decade. Our spa has helped many people by teaching them about lifestyle choices that can improve skin health and provided a haven for clients with sensitive and reactive skin. Petals & Clay is the result of my experience and knowledge working with raw ingredients in the treatment room. I'm grateful that people worldwide can now access this skincare line.
